Series: The basics of swimming pool maintenance (Chemistry)

Okay, do you remember the 3 basics of pool care? Filtration, Circulation and Chemistry?

Well in this blog post I'm going to do a quick overview of pool chemistry and hopefully give you a quick idea of what needs to be happening, chemically, inside of your swimming pool.

There are a countless number of different substances inside of pool water. Chemicals, dissolved solids, and things that you don't even want to know about! But for maintaining a swimming pool, there are seven chemicals that we monitor on a weekly basis and If you can master those seven chemicals, you've got a great chance of keeping your swimming pool blue!

The seven chemicals are: Calcium, PH, Alkalinity, Total Chlorine, Free Chlorine, and Cynaric acid (Well, maybe salt, but i'll ignore salt for now)

If any of these chemicals are not where they should be, you might start seeing problems, but there are a couple of these guys that are a little bit more important than the others. Lets call them the 'chemical divas', and If the chemical divas aren't happy inside the swimming pool, you're definitely going to have problems.

These divas are PH, alkalinity and free chlorine.

Now the other chemicals are important, so I don't want you think they can be ignored, but these three are the cause of most of our customers problems.

Below I have listed the level that the chemicals are acceptable at, and if your not seeing these numbers, you may already have a problem, or one is sneaking up on you!

PH - 7.2 to 7.8                                                                                                                                 Alkalinity - 80 - 120                                                                                                                                 Free Chlorine - 2 to 5
